Workshop audience

Dietitians, nutritionists (students and working professionals), we invite those in academia, public health, foodservice, dietetic interns, nutrition students.

Workshop Description

This interactive workshop provides guidance on how to share nutrition information in a way that minimizes the risk of triggering disordered eating, and reduces weight stigma. Participants will explore the impact of a practitioner’s language when discussing food, body image, and weight whether this is through individual client interactions or information shared through avenues such as social media, print resources, or public speaking engagements.

Dietitians and nutritionists from a variety of settings will benefit from this session, not just those in primary care. We invite those in academia, public health, foodservice, dietetic interns, nutrition students. This session is designed for dietitians who are not currently focusing their practice on working with clients living with an eating disorder and have not received much training in this area. However, all interested practitioners are welcome to attend.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session, you will

  1. Be able to identify your own beliefs and attitudes towards food and weight and how these may impact your current practice.

  2. Be able to identify some of the signs a client may be struggling with their body image and/or relationship with food.

  3. Have improved knowledge of how to engage clients in discussions around nutrition and their health in a way that minimizes the risk of disordered eating/eating disorders.

  • Interactive case studies
  • Break out rooms to discuss the case studies with other participants
